In Christianity, the Gospel, or "Good News" is defined as the story of Jesus, and how his life, death, and resurrection makes possible "salvation" from certain destruction at the hands of evil. However, KRS-One in his new book, "The Gospel Of Hip-Hop: First Instrument", defines the Gospel as something different, namely the story of Hip-Hop "Kulture", and how our understanding of its elements, laws, and mission will allow us to save ourselves from destruction at the hands of evil.
I do not wish to get into a theological discussion regarding the merits of such a philosophy, but I do see Hip-Hop as a culture, and I do regard KRS-One as a philospher, someone who has given enough thought to the topic of Hip-Hop to write a major work on it's mission. I also respect how he defines its structure, even though I feel he may be a little ambitious regarding his placement of Hip-Hop within the spiritual self-help spectrum.
Regardless of my skepticism, I would like to read his book, and attend one of his book readings, which start tonight at Barnes And Noble Tribeca.
I will most likely attend one of his readings later this week in Jersey, but here is the full schedule:
